May Day is an international Labor Day, but for Greece, besides that, it is a day of celebration of spring and nature.

It originates from Ancient Greece and is associated with human joy for spring and vegetation.

One of the most well-known customs is the traditional May Day Wreath made of various flowers and fruits and hung on the door of the houses.

It symbolizes the renewal of life and the arrival of spring after the dormancy of winter.

By adorning doorways or balconies with fresh flowers and fruits, people express their joy and gratitude for the rejuvenation of nature. Moreover, it is to ward off evil spirits, promote prosperity, and bless the home with fertility and abundance.

Another popular custom is organizing outdoor picnics or gatherings in nature to enjoy the beauty of spring. Families and friends gather to share food, dance, and sing traditional songs.

Additionally, local markets are selling handmade crafts, artisanal goods, and seasonal produce.

Protomagia is a time for people to connect with nature, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the arrival of spring in vibrant and joyful ways.
